Homework Week of 11/8/2010

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1) We are continuing stories in Super Kids.
2) We will read a story for 2-3 days. While reading with your child ask them what the story is about. Look at the pictures together for clues to help them with the words.
3)Phonics: Please practice writing lower case letters when you are doing phonics. This practice will help developing writing skills.
4) Math: We are continuing understanding subtraction.Please continue to practice Math Facts at home so children will become more confident as we move on to subtraction sentences. At the top of each math page is an example of work covered in class.Please review the sample problem so children will become more confident when reading and solving problems.
5) Science: We are moving on to reading about and identifying living and non-living things.We will be reading about and researching different habitats.
6) Social Studies: We are continuing our reading on communities.Concentrating on different communities and cultures in New York.
7) All Homework in Science, Social Studies and Religion are to be done in Notebooks. PLEASE REMIND THE CHILDREN TO SKIP LINES AND NUMBER THEIR RESPONSES. This practice will help them develop good writing habits.
8) WE WILL CONTINUE TESTING WEEK OF 11/22/2010. THERE WILL BE A MATH,PHONICS TEST AND RELIGION TEST.

4) Math: We will continue to practice Math Facts for 1 through 10 .We are moving on to Understanding Subtraction. Please continue to practice Math Facts at home so children will become more confident as we move to subtraction.
5) Science: We will continue to read about insects and bugs read and discuss the differences.
6)Social Studies: We are continuing our reading on communities. We will look at the different communities and how people adapt to their surroundings.

2) We will read a story for 2-3 days so children will be able to identify main idea,plot and characters. This will help them transfer this critical thinking skill to their writing.
3 Phonics: We will be alternating between Phonics work book and Super Kids Phonics work book. Please practice writing lower case letters when you are doing phonics homework. This practice will help in developing writing skills.
4) Math: We will continue to practice Math Facts for 1 through 4.
We are moving on to sums of 9 and 10 and sums of 11 and 12. PLEASE CONTINUE TO REVIEW MATH FACTS daily.

5) Science: We will continue to read and discuss animals: how they live and grow and how we can protect their environment.

2. In Math we will return to studying basic Math facts and fact families. Have students look for patterns in their math facts: EXAMPLE: 1+1=2/ 1+2=3/ 1+3=4 We will begin to work on reviewing counting to 100, identifying numbers, even/odd number concepts/counting by 5’s and counting by 2’s. There will be hands on activities so the children will become more confident when working with the 100’s Counting Charts and counting by 5’s and by 2’s. The next math test will be to complete the 100’s chart.


3. Memorial Day Weekend Homework will be math workbook page 73 and 100’s Chart study sheet/Super Kids Readers and Phonics

Then move on to learn how to close these shapes in hands on activities.We will move on to symmetry.EX: If you cut a paper heart shape in half and put back together the shape will be equal. Take a few minutes each day and try to find these shapes at home or in the neighborhood . Examples: mirrors, kites so they become familiar with the math vocabulary. We will be reviewing Patterns and Pattern Rules in class and as part of our homework.

1. Weekly test will begin April 19,2010 in Spelling and Math: New Words are in students folders. There will be a Phonics Assessment Test on April 20,2010, A STUDY SHEET WILL BE PLACED IN STUDENTS FOLDERS.
2. In Science we will begin to discuss and read about Earth Day. The students will begin to write about how we can keep our community, school and homes more energy efficient. How we can keep ourselves and pets healthy too.
3. In Math we will be moving on to tally charts, simple bar graphs and pictographs.Students will see graphs again in Science when we begin data collection for our Earth Day Projects.
